Echoes

Having lived in Nuneaton for all of my life, I have seen many changes. The town centre has gradually been eroded away with many iconic retailers, such as BHS, Woolworths and the Co-op, no longer there. Yet, in my memory there are key locations where my recollection of a location differs from how it is now. The buildings remain, but their purpose has changed. These are places that I have passed many times and yet when I recall those places, they are firmly fixed to a particular reference point on my own personal timeline.

Furthermore, I find it intriguing that these buildings have a history which goes back beyond my lifetime. Other people will have alternative memories of these places. I decide to use the app, Photoshop Mix, to combine three separate found images, to create a composite image. The resulting photographs show echoes of the past, with figures walking around the building from a different era. The first building I chose was the Ritz. It's a very tall, imposing brick building, on the very edge of the Roanne Ringway. It's been a cinema and a bingo hall. Now, it lies empty, awaiting redevelopment. It was the first cinema that I went to.

The second image (below) shows a composite image of the Market Place. Amongst what is otherwise a very nondescript town centre, the clock tower gives it its character. When I see the clock, I know that I'm back home. I think back to how generations before me would have relied on the clock to tell the time.
