she dances on Jackson is the result of Vanessa Winship's Henri Cartier Breton Award (2011). Her photo book (above) documents Winship's year-long journey across America, from California to Virginia. This study combines portrait and landscape photography, in an attempt to understand the link between a territory and its inhabitants. The black and white photographs show a much more intimate view of America, unlike the vast plains that we have seen in the past. The series is punctuated with portraits of the inhabitants, suggesting that Winship has made a connection to the places she has photographed rather than just passing through.
