'The social' used to be a term associated with those needing monetary assistance due to unemployment.
This term has been cleverly used for a recently commissioned work by Simon Roberts, who photographed leisure spaces in Sunderland where there used to be heavy industry. His large photographs depict people going about their everyday business, such as walking the dog along St. Peter's Riverside, whilst subtle references to Sunderland's industrial past lurk in the background.
Robert's style creates a historical narrative within an image. This extra depth to an image is something that I hope to include in my assignments for people and place.
